In 1839 five horseman were instructed by Mirabeau B. Lamar, then president of the Republic of Texas, to "Find the best location for our capital." The young
republic was only three years old when the special delegation was sent on this important mission.
The delegation traveled many miles and spent long hours looking for the best site for the capital. Finally, they selected a tiny village called Waterloo. The village was located in the center of the state where a good-sized river passed through fertile farm blacklands which rolled into scenic hill country. The name of the village was changed to Austin, after Stephen F. Austin, the leader of early United States settlers into the Texas territory, and was designated as the capital of Texas.
Today, Austin is a beautiful city of clean modern buildings, picturesque homes and large areas of tree-lined residential streets. Its amazing continued growth attests to the fact that Lamar's delegation made an ideal choice for the location of the capital city of Texas. Almost without exception, you will find everything to your liking in Austin. The school system here is rated as being one of the finest anywhere. The city services are without a doubt the best possible.
For those who are interested in culture and recreation, Austin has plenty to offer. For entertainment, the new resident may choose from such things as the University of Texas sports, frequent rodeos, Civic Theatre melodramas, Austin Libraries and many, many more events or places.
We will be adding the founding stories of other cities, villages and towns in the Greater Austin Area soon. History of Buda
